Excellence in education for outback children

Winton State School has earned a reputation for delivering high quality and comprehensive academic, social and cultural education.

The supportive environment and intense community spirit are validated by high behaviour standards, explicit improvement agendas, genuine community partnerships and the establishment of strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Our school vision is ‘Building Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today’. This compliments the Department of Education and Training’s vision of Inspiring Minds, Creating Opportunities and Shaping Queensland’s Future. These visions assure that every student is successfully engaged to their full potential in the myriad of opportunities our school provides.​​​​​​​​​​

As a P-12 school, we offer a "Crayon to Career" experience that ensures students are provided with a range of opportunities specific to their developmental needs.  Strong systems and processes underpin our relationship based philosophies ensuring consistency and stability throughout each student's learning journey.  This all takes place in a "Positive Behaviour for Learning" (PBL) environment.

Our sense of community is enhanced through our "Belonging Ceremony" which is conducted to welcome new students and staff to the school each year.  Each child's leaf is added to our tree to signify all the wonderful opportunities that are provided for our students in order grow into healthy individuals.

Our strong focus on student wellbeing enhances student outcomes.  We aim for every student who attends our school to set their goals high; not to be THE BEST but to do YOUR BEST.  Through the development of positive growth mindsets, students are encouraged to learn through mistakes; that initiative, resilience, problem solving and risk-taking are qualities that are essential to the learning process.

Our school has been recognised for our provision of high quality curriculum in a supportive environment through the external audit process.  The following commendations identified by the auditors signify all that we value highly at Winton State School.


* Commitment to the development of quality teaching practices is evident in the implementation of explicit instruction in every classroom.

* The school exhibits a strong sense of social justice and wellbeing which is reflected in the respectful and caring relationships, the range of lunch-time and afterschool activities for students and the daily breakfast program. It is most evident in the Belonging Ceremonies that welcome new students and staff members into the school community.

* Teacher aides are highly valued and receive regular training in relevant aspects of the school’s improvement agenda to support their contribution to students’ learning; they play a particularly important role in the school’s Reading Program.

*There is strong focus on reading from Prep – Year 10 with systematic alignment evident between the analysis of data, the explicit improvement agenda and targeted use of resources. There is a strong commitment from staff members that this is consistently implemented.


* The data walls in the school reflect staff members’ systematic use of data and commitment to monitoring students’ academic and behavioural progress.​
