The community

Winton is situated in Western Queensland, 178 km north-west of Longreach.  There are all-weather highways to Brisbane, Sydney, Rockhampton, Mt Isa and Townsville.  Winton is connected by rail to Rockhampton (via Longreach). There are some regular air services, and daily bus services to Brisbane and Mt Isa.

Winton Shire has a population of 1000 and approximately 800 residents live within the town itself. There are historical connections with the origins of Waltzing Matilda, QANTAS, and Lark Quarry (dinosaur tracks).  Winton is a remote, rural service centre.  Major economic influences are:  the wool industry, the beef industry, the tourist industry, gypsum and opal mining.

Year 12 students are usually successful in achieving university or TAFE offers if they wish, though most accept local employment.  Unemployment is uncommon.  The town is generally considered as having reasonable services and a friendly, progressive and pleasant place to live.

Winton is on a major crossroads in outback Queensland.  It is central for many Departmental activities as well as for tourists.  Long distance travel is a feature of outback life and the school uses the local community bus and other buses to travel to Mt Isa, Townsville, Emerald, and closer towns.
